A tapered or conical spring is a compression spring with a tapered body, which is characterized by a large outside diameter at one end and a small outside diameter at the opposing one. This unique design offers greater lateral stability than other spring types while resisting the tendency to collapse or buckle under heavy pressure. One of the main advantages of conical or tapered compression springs is that they require much less space than many other compression springs. The tapered shape and increasing (or decreasing) outer diameter allow conical compression springs to produce nearly constant spring rates and increased travel. They can be wound in either direction and the ends can be fabricated in virtually any configuration that meets your needs.

Also called a conical or cone spring, it provides a variety of performance advantages. All the following are reasons may want to consider using conical springs for your project:

  • Durable
  • Reduced Surging
  • Low Maintenance
  • Easy to Use
  • Exhibits a Telescoping Effect
  • Reduced Buckling and Bending
  • Has a Uniform Pitch
  • Optimal Energy Efficiency
  • High Rate of Energy Return
  • Reduced Height Compared to Straight Springs
  • Increased Stability Compared to Straight Springs
  • Slenderness Ratio Lowers as Spring Compresses

Conical compression springs provide a near-constant spring rate with a much lower height than regular springs, making them perfect for applications where space is a concern. This spring type is also prized for its energy efficiency. Tapered compression springs can be configured in various ways to suit your application, including hourglass shapes. Hourglass-shaped conical springs can be designed so that each coil is fully or partially inserted into an adjacent coil.

Common Conical Compression Spring Applications

Tapered springs are often used to resist applied compressive forces or store energy in the push mode. In most cases, the large end of a conical compression spring is designed to work within a bore while its smaller end fits right over a rod.

Typical applications that can benefit from tapered spring inclusion include:

  • Electrical Contacts
  • Battery Contacts
  • Push Buttons
  • Garage Doors
  • Automobile Suspension Systems
  • Lawn and Garden Equipment
  • Appliances
  • Furnaces
  • Boilers
  • Incinerators
  • Firearms
  • Overhead and Bay Doors
  • Agricultural Machinery
  • Stamping Presses
  • Compressors
  • Electronic Devices
  • Medical Equipment
