Carbon & Stainless Steel Springs
Basic custom springs have a wide variety of materials that can be used to achieve desired properties for different applications. In typical environments, under typical stress and load, many different spring materials will suffice. For applications where cost, availability, and ease of access are the most important factors, you can rely on Custom Spring Manufacturing to provide your custom product in the most fitting material according to your specific use case.
Carbon & Stainless Spring Alloys Explained
Music Wire is the most common material for small custom springs. Music wire is a carbon steel based material that is easily malleable to into any desired shape under .283″ in diameter. Offering a higher resistance to long time fatigue, a similar material known as oil tempered wire (OTMB) offers a few benefits over music wire, without dramatically increasing costs.
If a higher heat resistance is needed, Custom Spring Manufacturing offers several grades of Stainless Steel and Oil Tempered Chrome Silicon for high-heat applications. Withstanding temperatures up to 400F degrees, Oil Tempered Chrome Silicon can provide additional heat resistance over other carbon steel spring materials. Continuing to higher heat resistant materials, Custom Spring also offers 302, 316 and 17-7ph Stainless Steel that have high temperature resistance up to 500F, and 650F Degrees respectively. While all different, they share a variety of characteristics:
- Lower Cost
- Readily Available
- Wide Range of Sizes
- Corrosion Resistance
- High Temperance Resistance
- increased Rensile Strength
- Strong Electrical Conductivity
- Slight to Average Magnetic Property

Common Steel Alloys For Springs
At Custom Spring Manufacturing, we design and make high-performing finished products from carbon steel and stainless steel alloys for use in many industries. While our expertise is not limited to the materials listed, this range encapsulates a large majority of the materials used in everyday spring applications.
Music Wire & Oil Tempered Wires
Music Wire, sometimes known as piano wire, and Oil Tempered Wire are both made from high-carbon steel and are typically cold-drawn and then tempered to ASTM 228 &229 specifications. With a maximum temperature resistance of 250F degrees, these materials are not suited for high-heat applications. These materials are also not corrosion-resistant without additional treatment or coatings.
Oil Tempered Chrome Silicon has a higher operating temperature up to 400F degrees making them better suited for high-heat applications while keeping costs low. While Music Wire is simply carbon steel, chrome silicon is a ferrous alloy with specific amounts of chromium and silicon to add temperature resistance, shock absorption, and high stress.
302 and 316 Stainless Steel
302 and 316 stainless steel are both high-carbon stainless alloys commonly used for wire and spring applications. 302 SS is an austenitic alloy with 18% chromium and 8% nickel. This material has a slightly higher carbon percentage than more commonly available 304SS. 302SS provides a moderate amount of corrosion resistance in many environments avoiding oxidation and rust.
316 Stainless Steel is an upgrade over 302SS in several ways. This material offers the same heat resistance at 500F degrees, but additional corrosion resistance over 302SS. With a higher chromium, nickel, and molybdenum content, this material is greatly resistant to corrosive and stressful environments. This material is commonly used in Marine applications thanks to its resistance to cold saltwater settings.
17-7PH Stainless Steel
17-7PH Stainless Steel is a necessary material consideration for any high heat or high corrosion applications. Heat resistant up to 600F degrees, this material can withstand most high-heat applications. Typically used in Aerospace applications, 17-7PH is regularly used for springs in high-heat scenarios because its physical properties are not affected until far beyond 600F Degrees.
